12. Metrics Feature

What gets measured gets managed

12.1. Why We Measure

Every part of The Uvilo Method eventually asks the same question: is it working? Goals need evidence. Habits need feedback. Programs need a verdict. Metrics are how Uvilo answers that question with data instead of vibes.

A Metric is any number about your life that you care enough to track: body weight, daily steps, hours slept, minutes of meditation, money saved, pages written, mood on a 1–10 scale. Every program includes at least one metric, because a goal you cannot measure is a wish.

Metrics serve three roles in the method:

  • Baseline. Before we change anything, we record where you are. Progress only has meaning against a starting point.

  • Feedback. Life change is an experiment (see Monitoring, chapter 2). Metrics are the measurement step of the scientific method — they tell us whether the current program is working or whether we should change course, without judgment.

  • Proof. When motivation dips, the chart is the receipt. Seeing a line move over months is evidence that you are becoming the person you set out to be.

We distinguish behavior metrics (things you do: steps walked, sessions meditated, chapters read) from outcome metrics (results that follow: weight, resting heart rate, account balance). Behaviors respond to effort this week; outcomes respond over months. A good program watches both, and a good coach never scolds an outcome while the behaviors are on track.

12.2. The Anatomy of a Metric

Each metric has a definition — its name, category, unit of measurement, display precision, and its direction: whether higher is better (steps) or lower is better (screen time). The definition also knows how the metric behaves in time: some metrics accumulate over a day (steps, calories, minutes of focus), while others are point-in-time readings where the latest value is the truth (weight, resting heart rate).

The actual data is a series of values: timestamped samples, each tagged with its source — entered by hand, reported by a device, or computed by a formula.

Metrics come from three kinds of sources:

  • Manual — you type the number in.

  • Synced — a connected source reports it automatically: a wearable, a smart scale, a health app, or any other service you’ve connected to Uvilo.

  • Calculated — derived from other metrics by a formula. Enter three skinfold measurements and your body-fat percentage computes itself; lean body mass follows from weight and body fat.

When the same measurement can arrive from several devices, Uvilo maps every source onto one canonical metric. Your steps are your steps — whether they came from an Apple Watch, a Garmin, or your phone — so charts, goals, and habits always point at a single series, and switching devices never breaks your history.

12.3. The Metric Library

Uvilo ships a curated Metric Library: body composition (weight, body fat, girth measurements), activity (steps, energy burned), sleep, mindfulness, and more — each with sensible units, ranges, and goal defaults. Programs add their metrics automatically; you can also browse the library and add any metric yourself.

Related metrics form Metric Groups that are entered and viewed together. The skinfold group is the classic example: chest, abdomen, and thigh measurements sit on one row, and the calculated body-fat percentage appears beside them as you type. Adding a group member brings its companions along, so the workflow always works out of the box.

When the library doesn’t have what you need, create a custom metric: name it, pick or invent its unit, choose its direction and range. Glasses of water, pomodoros completed, cigarettes not smoked, chapters written — if it matters to you, it can be measured.

12.4. Units of Measurement

Every metric belongs to a measure — the dimension it quantifies: mass, length, time, energy, money, count, or a subjective scale. Each measure carries its family of units and the conversions between them.

Values are always stored in one canonical unit and converted only for display. You choose how each metric is shown — kilograms or pounds, kilometers or miles — and can change your mind at any time without touching the data. Unit preferences default sensibly from your locale (metric or US).

Subjective experience is measured too. Scales (1–5, 1–10) turn mood, energy, pain, or stress into a trackable series — imprecise on any given day, revealing over a quarter. Each step of a scale can carry a label — 1 = Terrible, 3 = OK, 5 = Great — and labeled scales are entered as a slider or a dropdown, so the user picks a word while Uvilo records a number.

And because no unit table can anticipate every life, you can define custom units — a pomodoro, a chapter, a serving — and attach them to your custom metrics.

12.5. Recording Values

Recording must be nearly effortless, because the habit of tracking should never cost more than the habit being tracked. Uvilo offers several paths, in decreasing order of effort:

  • Manual entry. A fast, spreadsheet-like table: pick the date, type the numbers for the whole metric group in one row. Editing and backfilling past days is first-class, not an afterthought.

  • Tell your coach. “I weighed 82.4 this morning” — the coach records it for you, mid-conversation, and it lands in the same series as every other value.

  • Automatic sync. Connect your devices once and steps, sleep, weight, and workouts flow in on their own (next section).

  • Calculated. Derived metrics update themselves whenever their inputs change.

Some metrics deserve the manual ritual — a daily mood rating is a moment of reflection. Everything that doesn’t should be automated.

12.6. Device and App Sync

Most wearables — Apple Watch, Oura, Whoop, Garmin, Withings, Polar, and many more — already deliver their data into the health hub on your phone: Apple Health on iOS, Health Connect on Android. The Uvilo mobile app reads those hubs (with your permission, per data type) and syncs the metrics you track. One connection covers a whole ecosystem of devices, and switching watches doesn’t break anything.

For users without the mobile app, selected services can also be connected directly from the web with their own accounts (starting with Oura).

However a source connects — through the phone’s health hub, a direct link to a service, or a partner integration — it appears in the same Connections list in the user’s settings, with the same connect, status, and disconnect controls. The user chooses what to connect; they never need to know how the connection works.

Health devices are the first family, not the boundary. Any connection can feed a metric. Uvilo connects to hundreds of everyday services — mail, calendar, notes, task trackers, finance tools — and each of them holds numbers worth watching: emails sent per day, hours booked in meetings, tasks closed per week, spend by category. What makes a connection a metric source is not that it measures the body; it is that it produces a number that changes over time. Those values land in the same series as a hand-typed weight, chart the same way, and can drive a habit the same way. Health is where automatic tracking starts because that is where the devices already are — but the mechanism is general, and a life has more measurable surfaces than a wrist.

Sync is designed for trust:

  • You choose what flows. Permission is granted per metric, and connecting a source only offers metrics your devices actually have data for.

  • You can see what happened. Every metric shows when it last synced and how many values arrived; a sync log answers “why is Tuesday missing?”

  • History comes along. Connecting a source backfills a configurable window of past data, so your charts start with context instead of a blank page.

  • Your data works only for you. Health data is used to coach you — never for advertising, never sold, never shared. Disconnect a source or delete its data at any time.

Sync is eventually fresh, not instant: hubs deliver in batches, typically when you open the app and periodically in the background. Coaching runs on daily rhythms, so this is a feature, not a bug — but it is stated honestly.

12.7. Metrics and Goals

Uvilo frames metric goals in two layers.

The goal band turns every day into a traffic light. Two thresholds — a good value and a great value — divide the range into red, amber, and green: 8,000 steps is OK, 10,000 is the goal. Bands power the dashboard gauges and habit auto-complete, and they respect the metric’s direction (for screen time, under two hours is green).

The SMART target adds time: from your baseline, reach a target value by a target date — lose 6 kg by June 1st, save $5,000 by year end. Uvilo tracks percent progress and projects your trajectory: at the current pace, will you arrive? Targets are set with your coach during goal framing (chapter 10) and revisited at every reevaluation (chapter 2), where a finished target is celebrated and a stale one is renegotiated — not silently abandoned.

12.8. Habit Auto-Complete

This is where metrics and the Habit Calendar (chapter 11) snap together. A habit can be linked to a metric with thresholds: walk 15,000 steps daily marks itself Done when the synced step count reaches 15,000, and Partial at 10,000. For lower-is-better metrics the comparison flips: screen time under 2 hours completes when the day stays below the line.

The rules of engagement:

  • Completion is instant. The moment the synced count crosses a threshold — or you log a value by hand — the linked task updates. No waiting until tonight to see today’s checkmark.

  • Auto-complete only ever upgrades a task (Empty → Partial → Done). It never downgrades, and it never overrides a state you set by hand.

  • Stay-under habits are the one patient case: “under 2 hours” can only be confirmed once the day is over, so those habits complete at day’s end. And a late-syncing watch doesn’t cost you a streak — data arriving within the habit’s grace period still counts.

  • If the data never arrives, the task simply stays empty for you to record — silence is not a zero.

Auto-complete removes the most demoralizing kind of friction: doing the work and then having to do the bookkeeping too. You walked the steps; the checkmark is on us.

Every metric has an explorable chart: pan and zoom through your history — pinch on mobile — with range presets (week, month, quarter, year, all). Values aggregate honestly as you zoom out: daily sums for accumulating metrics, averages or last-readings for point-in-time ones, with a smoothing line to tame day-to-day noise. Goal bands and target trajectories draw directly on the chart, so “am I on track?” is visible at a glance. Days with no data show as gaps, never as zeros.

Gauges put chosen metrics on your dashboard as red/amber/green dials over a window you pick — today, yesterday, or a 7- or 30-day average — the ambient answer to “how am I doing lately?“

12.10. The Coach and Your Numbers

Metrics give the AI coach ground truth. Through AI tools, the coach can look up your metrics and recent values, record a value you mention, add a metric from the library, and adjust goal thresholds with you — all inside a conversation.

The coach uses this access the way a good human coach would:

  • Grounding. Check the actual numbers before giving advice — never guess, never rely on the user’s recollection alone.

  • Monitoring. If a metric stalls or a source stops syncing, distinguish the two before reacting: a flat line from a dead battery is not a motivation problem.

  • Celebration and course correction. Milestones get noticed; drifting programs get the troubleshooting conversation (chapter 2), backed by the chart.

  • Restraint. Numbers inform the coaching; they are never used to shame. The data is a map, not a report card.

12.11. Design Principles

  • Effortless honesty. The easier recording is, the truer the record. Automate everything that can be automated; make the rest one tap.

  • Trends over points. A single reading is weather; the trend is climate. Coaching reacts to trajectories, not Tuesdays.

  • The metric serves the goal. When a measure becomes the target, it stops measuring. If chasing a number stops serving the life change behind it, we change the metric, not the life.

  • Zero is data; silence is not. A recorded zero and a missing day mean different things, and Uvilo never confuses them.

  • You own your numbers. Per-metric consent, visible sync history, full export and deletion. The coach reads your data; nobody else does.
